Beatles Ashram: Street Art in the Jungle
Since The Beatles have visited Rishikesh in 1968, the city and it`s inhabitants use their world famous name on every occasion. Back then The Beatles used to have their own huge territory, The Beatles Ashram, where they practiced transcendental meditation with their Guru Maharishi Mahesh. Regardless of the big likelihood that all the spiritual experiences where based on the use of drugs and not on years of meticulous meditation and also notwithstanding that The Beatles and their Guru seperated most likely in a conflict, the city still benefits from the visit of this unique band. Well, you either discuss this or not, but you should definitely stop discussing at some point and go to this abandoned ahram and enjoy!
It is very easy to find and every local should know about it. So just ask your way through. Or you go to the part of Rishikesh which is called „Rahman Jula“ and is outside the touristical center of the city. From there you just follow the Ganges river, which should be to your right hand, down stream until the road or path ends and turns left. There you will find the Beatles Ashram. And also find out that there are 10 $ entrance fee to be paid.
Lust-4-Life Tip: Break in to the Beatles Ashram very early, safe your money and be there totally alone.
You just follow the river on to the beach after the road has ended. After you have passed some little cabins of holy or homeless men you turn to your left and climb some stairs. Then you struggle through some bushes and finally climb a little wall. Just make sure you will be there early enough to visit everything and leave before it opens at 10 o’ clock. So be there at 7 o’ clock.
The Beatles Ashram is a huge area of buildings and forest which are to be discovered. These abandoned constructions are fighting for their survival because little by little the wild forest is engulfing all of them. To witness those destructive and at the same time creative forces of nature leaves a visitor awestruck.
Another thing which makes a visitor open his eyes, is the plenty of fabulous street art all over the buildings. It was a huge pleasure to explore this majestic open air museum.
Now, enjoy the photos of my excursion. And also go there once yourself and feel the magic of this place!
