“Walk the Camino”
Almost everybody has heard about the “Camino”, that pilgrim way in Spain, which has been in movies and books so often. Friends and relatives have done it and they`re all amazed. But still a lot of people are insecure if this is the right experience for them, if “just walking everyday” is enough entertainment in their holidays and if this way can make them happy for a few weeks.
Well, we have enlisted more than enough reason, which make last doubts disappear and show that a journey on “The Way of Saint James” offers a variety of intersting things to discover, do and experience.
The daily walking has an immense effect on your well being and your heatlh. Not only the movement of your legs but also the fresh air and the energising nature make you feel newborn after a few (in the beginning very hard) days.
Health is a fundamental column of our lifes, so walk this way and you will feel better than ever before, promise!
2. Meet People
In general it is easier to meet people while travelling, that’s a fact based by my own experience. Everybody tries to be more open minded, has no work stress and is mostly in a good mood. But on the “Camino” the openness towards strangers is on a whole different level. Nothing gets people closer than reaching the same goal together. That’s why this 800 km walk unites poeple in a very intense way. Whereever they come from and whatever their backround story may be, they all want to reach this cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Not only this but also living, eating, walking, struggling and succeding together will make a family out of individuals from all over the world.
3. The World At One Place
The Way of Saint James draws people from all over the world to his paths. It is undeniable that this pilgrim way is commercialised all over the western world and has become a magnetising journey for people from all our planet. Nowhere else you can meet so many different people united at a trail, which has for that reason become a magic place of intercultural exchange.
The North of Spain has developed through and with the evolution of the Camino. Plenty of meaningful and interesting cities have developed along the Camino and they all have their art treasures. But not only in the big cities like Santiago de Compostela, León, Burgos and Pamplona one can find art. Also in the small village the open eyed pilgrim will be surprised by the richness of art which “the Camino” has to offer.
The best way to forget about our all day routines is to throw oneself into a new activity in a whole new setting far away from home. A pilgrimage is a 24/7 experience and one does it with heart and blood. The awesome company of the other pilgrims will help you to find your way into this new world.
You will also meet a lot of people who have quit their jobs or come out of a long relationship or even a divorce. The one who needs disctance finds himself at the right place on “the Camino”.
6. Spiritual Experience
Well, the whole life is a spiritual journey and you can make your experiences everywhere. But the less disturbing factors are distracting your mind, the more intense the spiritual experience will be. On “the Camino” you are without television, less socia media, less comfortzone and so you have more capacity to deal with yourself and observe and calm your mind.
“Life is really simple, but we insist on making it complicated” once said Konfuzius, always ready to give advice. Our society has reached a ironic point, where simplicity has become a luxury good. By walking and focusing on “the Camino” and living only with the basics, we will learn what we have lost in our modern society: Closeness to life. But you will rediscover this feeling on the camino, where it is simply about eating and drinking, sleeping, having good company and taking one step after another.
8. Get to know yourself better
If one is seperated from his normal life for a period, he will experience himself in another more pure and real way. Who are we if we lose all the things around us who define us? On “the Camino” you will find some answers.
How to get there is up to you. But in general the Way of Saint James is a cheap travel destination. To walk, to breath fresh air, meet other pilgrims, enjoy the astonishing nature all are free and the main things to do on the camino.
The prices for a bed in the albuergues are moderate (start from 5 euros in a “municipal”). What one will spend is also up to oneself. But keeping things simple also saves a lot of money.
10. Get to know the Spanish closely
The tourism on the Way of Saint James is a different one than on the party beaches or in the big cities. A lot of folks there have been pilgrims themselves once and still have a deep connection to this way and its pilgrims. Thats why pilgrims will be taken care of in a very honest way and a true, intersting cultural exchange will take place.
In the rural places along the way you will meet some “originals”!
11. A world itself
Pilgrimage is an own world, in which you escape. By accepting it, you will be most of all a pilgrim for a few weeks. The travel experience on “the Camino” is unique and swallows a lot of people each year. Being a pilgrim once, you will want to be one over and over again. There are a lot of stuck people, who walk one camino after another. I am one of them, Hello!
12. Pilgrimage as a human tradition
A pilgrimage, the reaching of a set aim by foot is human tradition, as written about pilgrimages in the big books. Humans have most certainly discovered earth by walking. Walking itself is a very basic but meanigful task. Step in the footsteps of your ancestors and discover a piece of land by foot!
In the north of Spain many delicious things are waiting for willing palates. You are walking thorugh different regions, where each of them has got their own specialities to offer. Tapas and Pincho – tradition is big in the cities and a vivid bar culture is to be found. In many bars you can order a small beer or a glass of wine and a little delicious snack will be served with it.
